Vaughn Hewlett Epperson, beloved husband, father, brother, son, uncle and friend, passed away at his home on Friday, March 28, 2008, after a long illness.

Vaughn was born on July 4, 1948 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the son of Vaughn Elmo and Margaret Ann Stewart Hewlett Epperson. As a Green Beret in the 19th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Utah Army National Guard, Vaughn was awarded the Medal of Valor for Heroism.

Vaughn found the perfect outlet for his talents and abilities with the Salt Lake City Fire Department, where he served for 25 years before retiring. In 1975 he was a member of the first paramedic class to be certified in the Utah paramedic program. He considered himself a firefighter first, but found his true calling as a paramedic, serving the community in responding to medical emergencies. His work saved and prolonged the lives of many. He worked as a paramedic with Utah's Air Med from approximately 1979 through 1981.

Vaughn adored his family and delighted in spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a devoted and loving husband to his wife, Cathy, and they shared a deep and abiding affection. Vaughn was loved by all who knew him. His love of practical jokes, his ready laugh, his charm, his sensitivity and his willingness to help will be greatly missed. He maintained an innocence of spirit and a love of life despite the horrific scenes he witnessed in his career. Vaughn faced his illness with courage, grace and good humor.

Vaughn is survived by his wife, Cathy Murdock; sons Charles and Michael (Lori), step-son Steven Murdock; daughter, Keri (Jessy) Smith; nine grandchildren; his mother, Margaret Ann; sister, Kay (Franz) Amussen; and two brothers, David (Diane) and Larry (Janet). Preceded in death by his father, Vaughn and sister, Ann.
