Elva Cotterell ** (Vice Principal)

Elva Louise Cotterell, esteemed educator and administrator, died peacefully in her sleep at her home in La Costa, Calif., at the age of 94.

Ms. Cotterell attended LDS High School and received her BA in Psychology and Mathematics at the University of Utah. After teaching briefly at Fremont and Columbus elementary schools, she taught Psychology and Mathematices at East High School. When she earned her Master's Degree at Columbia University she returned to Salt Lake City and had the rare, if not unique experience of holding administrative posts in the city's three oldest high schools. She was Dean of Girls at South High School; Vice Principal at West High School, and Vice Principal at East High School. During her summers she did additional graduate work at Stanford University and University of Southern California. When she retired in 1967 she was Social Studies Specialist at the Board of Education headquarters.Ms. Cotterell was highly respected by her superiors and in the community. She will be remembered for her caring and unselfish devotion to students. She valued each human being regardless of sex, color, religion, or status. She constantly emphasized the value of service to others and the need for guide post plans to attain lasting happiness. She was loved and admired by her many students which was evident by an abundance of letters of appreciation that she received.

She was active in city and service organizations. She held both president and secretary positions with Salt Lake City Administrator's Association; was a member of the Board of Directors of YWCA and YWCA Teenage committee; was a charter member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an organization for women teachers; was active in the local branch of Zonta International, a service club for executive and professional women. By invitation she attended Kiwanis weekly meetings while Vice Principal of West High School. She was a member of UEA, NEA, and NRTA, serving as secretary of the Retired Teachers Association.

She was a member of Delta Gamma Social Fraternity and an active alumnus.

Ms. Cotterell held many positions in her church, including Primary and Sunday School teacher at Forest Dale and 21st Wards; MIA and Sunday School presidency and stake boards in Liberty and Bonneville stakes; and Primary teacher trainer. She was an active member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers.

Ms. Cotterell was born in Farmington, Utah on July 20, 1902 to Joseph William and Sarah Louise Cotterell. Four brothers and two sisters, preceded her in death: Newell, Clesson, Sidney, Donald, Leila Lundquist, and Maurine Parry. She is survived by her two sisters, Beth Stewart of Salt Lake City and Vera Leeper of La Costa, CA. She had 20 nieces and nephews. She requested no services. She rests at Wasatch Lawn Mausoleum, Highland Drive, SLC.

Elva  and her sister were very special ladies, I was able to get to know them away from school and really admired  her.
