Emmett Harris

Emmett Harris

Emmett "Mutt" Harris
April 3, 1948 ~ July 15, 2020
Born to Harold and Nona Harris.
Emmett began working as an auto mechanic at the family business (Harris Auto) at age 8 and continued to do so up until the family businesses were sold. He was loved and known as honest, ethical and trustworthy by his friends and many wonderful customers.

Our dear friend Emmett loved his life. He loved cars, working on them, building them, collecting them and always helping people with them.

He was known in his younger days to cruise state street in his cars, and possibly racing them, he has many long time friends from those days.  You would have seen him in his GTO originally and then later on in the Corvette or the Chevelle, he had many stories about racing people in the Corvette and if they would beat him, he would go to the shop and get the Chevelle out and go challenge them with that. He always loved the power and the possibilities of what could be done with modifying a car.

Emmett loved his customers and could be called upon day or night to go out and do a road call, no matter if it was freezing cold in a windstorm, or even at an inconvenient time, you could call and he would be there for you. He and Paul opened their own shop (EP Auto). His customers always knew he was giving them a fair and honest estimate about the repairs needed on their cars. He was definitely not the typical auto mechanic that you hear stories about.

Emmett loved to travel with many trips to his favorite place Hawaii, Mexico, and the Caribbean. He loved to get away from the cold weather in Utah and go and get a sunburn on a beach somewhere. He always loved women, a good drink, and his friends of which there were many.

Upon his passing a friend wrote:
'He gave, He gave freely, without reservation in the only way he knew how. He was honest and true to his ideals. When his gift of giving was taken away, he knew he had no choice, he had to leave EP Auto. Leaving behind...sadness for the loss... We are grateful for the privilege of knowing him."

Emmett is survived by his son Gator (Heather) and his granddaughters Erica and Tessa, and his grandson Ian.

I knew Emmett in school and always liked and respected him.  He was fun and a good person and I am sorry to hear he has left us.  Hopefully, he is racing one of his beautiful cars in heaven.  God Bless Emmett!

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Emmett.  As I thought of Emmett and read the brief history of his life, I was taken back to the years that we knew each other - ages 6 to 13.  During those years we lived in the same neighborhood and went to the same elementary school.   I vividly remember playing kickball with him at school - an activity that disappeared many, many years ago.   He could kick the ball so much further than anyone else and he could run so fast.  At that age those skills were so very important - enough so that I remember Emmett's skill set all these years later.  He was always friendly and I was aware that he had joined his dad, working in his dad's auto mechanic business.  I admired that.  My dad took his car to their shop any time repairs or tune-ups were needed.  They were honest, fair, and very competent.  We moved from that neighborhood when I was 13, and although Emmett and I went to Roosevelt Junior High and East High School together, we really lost touch during those years.  His collection, love, and enjoyment of cars - from the Corvette to the Chevelle - was understandable and certainly brought a smile to my face.  Rest in peace.

I met Emmett when we attended EAST HIGH. I was one of those that sometimes cruzzed State street with Emmett. There were times he would bring his little brother with him, he was about 2 years old. Always got a laugh out of that. I kept in touch with Emmett over the years. He always worked on my vehicles. He was an outstanding Auto mechanic, honest as could be and was always able to bring a smile to my face and a warm friendly feeling. He will be missed........ Fond memories........

Small Tidbit:  Emmett's dad was the bishop of our ward.  Emmett and I were called in to be interviewed for an LDS mission in February 1967.  We got together and decided to tease his dad about where we would like to go.  During the interview we were asked where we would like to go.  We told bishop Harris we would like to go to Milwaukee or Golden Colorado.  Our reasoning was one city was the home of Budweiser and the other was the home of Coors

I informed bishop Harris that I had a commitment for the next 3 years.  I had to report for active military duty on April 10, 1967.

Emmett was a good friend, and had a great sense of humor.  I remember him very fondly.
